Nikkei Vote Against Discrimination; Vote No on 8
Members

Not long ago some of our own family members had to endure anti-Japanese legislation in California as well as the anti-miscegenation laws. Some families still feel the effects of this kind of legislation, we should never add discrimination in California's constitution for any group or religion.

Vote NO on 8!

JACL Advacacy

The JACL has a long history of advocating for policies that protect and promote the welfare of Japanese Americans, Asian Americans and other communities. This history of advocacy includes the repeal of the Cable Act during the 1930s, which caused Americans to lose their citizenship if they married an Issei, to the Redress campaign in the 1980s, which provided remedies for the injustice of the internment during World War II.

JACL’s advocacy has included participation in transformational events in American history such as joining in an amicus brief in the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 and supporting the 1965 Immigration Law, which equalized immigration quotas for Asian countries, providing a pathway to America for many Asians in the years that followed.

Today, the JACL continues its rich history of civil rights advocacy by initiating action or by monitoring important issues in partnership with other major civil rights organizations.

API Gather In Little Tokyo
“Existing law in California prohibits the government from discriminating based on race, gender or sexual orientation,” said Lieu. “At the same time, there is nothing in the law that prevents churches from continuing to maintain their own religious practices and policies. Proposition 8 would turn this fundamental distinction between the government and religion by elevating religious doctrine which would oppose same-sex marriage over governmental laws that prohibit discrimination. That is wrong. We live in a democracy, not a theocracy.”

“Our history as Japanese Americans has been our struggle to expand equality, to become full, whole American citizens,” Takei told The Rafu Shimpo. “To me, it is astounding that there are Asian Americans that seem unaware of that history and now are advocating for hate and discrimination. Proposition 8 must be defeated.”

Site Upgrade v7
PHP-Fusion

I'm going to upgrade the site to v7.  This is a major upgrade from v6.01.15, and some functions may not work after the upgrade.  I will be backing up the database, and the site, so nothing will be lost.

The site may go down while I work on upgrading it.

09042008 at 1655, site is updated.  If you find or get any error messages please post it in the bug section of the forums or here under this subject.  Some functions are not compatible to v7, so I had removed them.  I will reinstall other features in time, so that there won't be to many issues after an upgrade.

If you find any posts missing, I'll try to recover them, but it looks like everything is good.

Site Link Problem
PHP-FusionI just noticed that the link to the site [http://nikkeiancestry.com ] is not working for some reason.  You'll have to use [http://nikkeiancestry.com/news.php ].  I don't know how long or why it's not working.  I'm looking into it.

Problem solved! :-)  It's okay, both can be used now.

Site Upgraded
PHP-FusionI upgraded the site to 6.01.15.  This caused the special shout box mod to revert to the original site version.  Not much activity here to take the time to put it back in.  PHP-Fusion will be coming out with a better forum v7 some time next month, possibly, so I may upgrade this site to that as well.

Domain Name Change - Nikkei Ancestry
NewsI've been waiting to get a different domain name for the site, and the ones I wanted where always taken. I just purchased nikkeiancestry.com, and I will be transferring the site and database over. The current sub domain will forward to nikkeiancestry.com, for those that don't know about the change. As in any change there may be some mishaps, but I'm hoping that this will go smoothly, and we won't even notice the change.

Nikkei - Japanese people who emigrated from Japan and their descendants.

Help WWII Vets Campaign - The Nisei Commemorative Stamp Petition
NewsThere is a campaign going on to encourage the US Postal Service to recognize and create a Nisei WWII Veterans Stamp.

Many Japanese American's served in WWII in order to prove they're loyalty as Japanese American's. Many of them served in a segregated unit, the 442nd, and the 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team, was a highly decorated unit because of their bravery in combat service helping free captured American soldiers and liberating Dachau concentration camp.

Many Japanese American soldiers didn't speak about their service, including my father. He never spoke about it, so I never knew about his service or this unit. We should honor these soldiers with a Nisei Commemorative Stamp. Please sign the petition at the link below, and contact your representative and inform them about this campaign.

Help WWII Vets Campaign - The Nisei Commemorative Stamp Petition : [ powered by iPetitions.com ] The Nisei WWII Veterans Stamp Campaign is a nationwide, grassroots campaign created by wives, family members and friends of the veterans. It is all-volunteer run, and funded by individual members who contribute their time and energy. Our goal is to convince the U.S. Postal Service to issue a commemorative postage stamp soon to honor the Japanese Americans who served during WWII. The Postal Service has notified us that they will formally review our proposal in January 2008. Anyone, from any nation, is welcome to help in this effort. Thank you! PLEASE CONTINUE CAMPAIGNING AFTER YOU SIGN THIS INTERNET PETITION. This internet petition does not replace the handwritten one. Sign both petition forms if possible. They will be sent separately. Join in our resolutions and letter-writing campaigns.

Oyama Family Challenged Alien Land Laws
NewsI often wonder how different the lives of the Japanese American's would be if they were allowed to purchase the land they farmed. I feel the distrust in the government was the reason why some Japanese American's didn't buy the land, and they would only lease it from the landowners.

Forbidden From Owning Property
During this time, Kajiro sought to acquire farmland in Chula Vista. Under California's "Alien Land Act," enacted in 1913 and upheld by the Supreme Court 10 years later, he was forbidden to own agricultural property because he was "ineligible for citizenship" as a Japanese immigrant.

Manual Registration
MembersThere was a lot of spam bots registering and posting spam in comments, so I've switched to activating membership manually. The spam bots still register, but I will delete them if I know it's spam. Though sometimes I may not be able to know for sure, so if I activate any new members and later find it's another spam bot I'm going to delete them.

If I inadvertently delete a legitimate registration, please let me know, you can email me a private message. Thanks for your cooperation!

Oh, well, I guess you couldn't send me a PM if I deleted you? Duh!  Send me an email...

Wakamatsu Colony, 1869
NewsThe First Japanese Colony of the Continental United States [1869]
Wakamatsu Colony, a State Historical Landmark, is known as the site where the first group of Japanese immigrant settled in the Continental United States in June 1869. Now a group has launched a $4.6 million fundraising campaign to tell the unique story of the colony’s Issei residents and the legend of a young girl named Okei-san.

“The Gold Hill-Wakamatsu Colony Campaign” was launched by American River Conservancy (ARC), The Sacramento, Placer and Florin Chapters of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL). Gold Hill, the setting for the tale, is today a rural area, located between Placerville and Coloma in western El Dorado County, Calif. [Read More]

Family Tree DNA
Everyone should have a Family Tree DNA test done.  If it's not collected before it's to late, then they're out of luck. I had a heck of time getting  genealogy information from my own family and now three older family members are dead and gone.

Stalking Strangers’ DNA to Fill in the Family Tree
They swab the cheeks of strangers and pluck hairs from corpses. They travel hundreds of miles to entice their suspects with an old photograph, or sometimes a free drink. Cooperation is preferred, but not necessarily required to achieve their ends.

oKawa-san. Disregard my question. Continued investigation showed me how to find articles, etc. Thank you.

@lost31566, not sure what you mean by "file color removed." There are only two old articles; ones a glossary, and ones about the koseki. Both are old information.

21/11/2008 21:01
How do I display the article/s? I click on the titles and I get the same page with the file color removed.
